How to use this resource
The material in this resource can be used with Key Stage 3 students after they have watched a performance of 'Street Wise'. To obtain a copy of the Street Wise performance on DVD please request using the eForm on the left.
Each session is closely tied to the National Curriculum, especially Citizenship, PSHE and English. All activities take into consideration the Every Child Matters framework and cater for a range of learning styles.
Some of the sessions do follow on from each other and develop skills and knowledge acquired in previous lessons, but each session has been written as a stand alone unit. Worksheets and/or support cards also accompany most lessons. Not all lessons are suitable for all students and it is not the intention that all 14 lessons are delivered after watching the performance. Material can easily be adapted to suit a variety of class sizes and abilities, although this resource has been designed with a mixed ability group of 30 in mind.
Each lesson plan has been written for an hour-long session. All timings within the session are approximate although many of the activities, including discussion work, are intended to be managed quickly in order to avoid disengagement. Teachers should adapt timings to suit their students.
The lesson plans have been written for any teacher to deliver to students of any ability in KS3 including those teachers with little or no experience of managing drama in the classroom. All sessions include tasks requiring speaking and listening skills; opportunities are given for talk in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes. For this reason, students will develop their ability to work collaboratively.
Learning outcomes are differentiated to include all students and the lessons have been designed with this in mind. The PowerPoint presentations are intended, in most cases, to be used as a visual stimulus and support material should your students need it. Schools without access to projectors can print out the slides as handouts for students to use in class. Higher level thinking and creative tasks have been included to engage more able students. Scenarios can easily be adapted to include those that are more relevant to your students.
Possible homework tasks and suggestions for further activities are attached to the end of each lesson plan in order to extend teaching and learning.
