Keeping Kent's Roads Clean
Working in Partnership.
Why work together?
Kent is one of the most picturesque counties in the UK. Our coast, countryside, towns and villages, along with the roads which connect all these together, make up the character of our county. In order to sustain a clean environment in Kent we wish to work together to attack the ever present issue of litter on our roads.
What is our vision?
Our vision is:
To work together to improve the cleanliness of highways in Kent to ensure residents and visitors have a
positive perception of our roads and countryside.
What are we going to do?
A range of actions and initiatives have been developed which we detail below:
- The Highways Agency will participate and be represented on the Clean Kent Campaign partnership and associated working groups.
- We will look for synergy for developing joint cleansing activities between the Highways Agency and Kent local authorities.
- The Highways Agency and local authorities will ensure they provide resources to adopt a programme of road cleansing to ensure appropriate cleansing standards are maintained.
- We will provide and exchange information to improve the efficiency and planning of road cleaning e.g. by providing local authorities with access to the Highways Agency's schedule of road works.
- We will develop good communication routes between our organisations to ensure effective exchange of information relating to littering issues.
- We will actively participate in the educational promotions via the Clean Kent Campaign aiming to increase awareness of litter as an important environmental issue.
- The Highways Agency will continue to make use of the
Considerate Contractor
initiative which requires all contractors to resolve littering issues which could be caused as a consequence of their work. - We will work together to assist in the delivery of successful enforcement activity to tackle those persons committing littering offences.
- We will jointly monitor and report upon the cleanliness of our roads.
What is our commitment?
Kent local authorities and the Highways Agency give a commitment to take action to maintain high standards of cleanliness of roads in the county. By working together, sharing experiences and information and by developing new projects aimed at tackling litter we hope that residents and visitors to the county have a clean and pleasant environment in which we live, play and work.
