Swale Borough Council is supporting the Clean Kent Campaign through its local Cleaner Swale Campaign.
The Cleaner Swale Campaign is trying to prevent scenes like this
One element of this local initiative is to encourage residents to dispose of unwanted items safely. To help with this, Swale Borough Council provides a Saturday morning collection service (between April and October) at key locations throughout the area periodically, whereby residents can bring items to a central point in their neighbourhood. Anyone who has difficulty through disability etc will receive assistance to discard there unwanted items. The campaign is also supported by volunteers from the local community who come along on a Saturday morning and assist in loading the vehicles.
Such has been the success of the scheme it is outgrowing itself and Swale Borough Council are currently investigating further options to enhance and extend the scheme.
It is clear that a lot of unwanted items are being disposed of correctly which otherwise may end up being fly-tipped or disposed of illegally by disreputable and unlicenced profiteers.
