Ashford Borough Council covers a mostly rural area with two urban towns, Ashford and Tenterden. It covers an area of 224 square miles, 47607 households and 105,000 residents.

The Council aims to improve the environment, this reflects the view of our customers who want cleaner, litter free streets, that are attractive and inviting, not blighted by dumped rubbish and where people feel safe and children can play without fear.

The Council's Clean Team covers abandoned vehicles, emptying of dog and litter bins, dog fouling, fly posting, fly tipping, graffiti and gum removal, littering, street sweeping and waste collection services.

It's campaign to tackle abandoned vehicles has been highly effective. Operations Cubit and CubitPlus are regular events that the Council undertakes with DVLA, Kent County Council, Kent Fire and Rescue and Kent Police. Cubit tackles abandoned vehicles while CubitPlus covers street cleansing, graffiti removal and other issues related to anti-social behaviour. Contact 01233 330520 for more details.

Removing graffiti is carried out in partnership with the Kent Probation Service, adults serving Community Punishment use the Grimebuster machine under supervision. The aim is to remove all offensive, racist and abusive graffiti within 48 hours of it being reported. Contact 01233 330535 for more details.

The Council has, in association with Maidstone BC, Swale BC and Tunbridge and Malling BC, paid a contribution towards the Kent County Council Clean Kent Campaign team of 2 men, graffiti/chewing gum removal kit and vehicle to tackle environmental clean ups including fly posting and fly tipping. Contact 01233 330535 for more details.

Street Cleansing is undertaken under contract on a frequency based schedule and varies from daily in towns to thirteen times per year in some rural areas. Emptying of dog and litter bins is also carried out under the same contract. Dog owners are encouraged to utilise dog waste bins placed at key locations for walkers. Fixed Penalty Notices for dog fouling and littering have been issued using evidence from Council Officers. Contact 01233 330535 for more details.

Fly tipping, the dumping of unwanted materials is having an adverse effect on the environment and is taken very seriously. The Council in conjunction with Kent County County, has taken prosecutions using evidence obtained by detailed investigations after the event. Contact 01233 330535 to report flytipping on public land.

Waste services, including the blue box and green waste recycling and bulky collection are also vital in keeping our streets clean and litter free. Waste must not be placed out until the evening before collection and until collected remains the responsibility of the householder. The Council's bulk collection service or Kent County Council's household waste and recycling site at Chart Leacon should be used for any household item larger than a domestic sized dustbin. Electrical goods such as televisions and microwaves are now classified as hazardous waste and these can be disposed of at the KCC site. Contact 01233 330728 for more details.

We also work with, and support, communities to remove fly tipping and litter. Volunteers include individuals, groups of residents and voluntary organisations. We arrange for the group to have gloves, bags, litter pickers and fluorescent waistcoats, and for the full bags to be collected at the end of the clean up. Contact 01233 330535 for more details.
